Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History

99-101 Broadway

Next Event

Film: Pather Panchali - Fri, Jun 21, 2024 - 6:30 pm

For nearly a century, two generations of the Jewish immigrant Reher family ran a bakery from the storefront of 101 Broadway in Kingston, New York, and lived upstairs. Kingston residents of the surrounding Rondout neighborhood, mostly working class and immigrant, came to Reher’s for bread, canned goods, and gossip. Today, the site is a museum and cultural center that preserves and honors the legacy of Reher’s Bakery and amplifies immigrant stories of the Hudson Valley, past and present. The Reher Center’s mission is to foster belonging by engaging all people through culture, community, work, and bread. The Reher Center offers guided tours of its historic bakery and visiting hour for the gallery on weekends from July-November.

Taking Root Exhibition

Taking Root is the newest exhibition on view at the Reher Center Gallery. This exhibition features the personal and family stories of 36 narrators from 22 countries and 6 continents who have made a home in the Hudson Valley. They shared their stories with us between 2019 and 2022 as part of the Reher Center’s growing Hudson Valley Immigrant Oral History Project. Their experiences are brought to life through oral histories, tintype portraits, and the smells of beloved cuisines.
This multimedia exhibition amplifies the stories of local immigrants as never before. Come listen to the voices of our storytellers – their joys, tastes, tears, and laughter – and immerse yourself in what is unique to each person and what is held in common about being an immigrant to the Hudson Valley.
