Don’t miss this opportunity to catch 11+ piece international ensemble Sekanjabin with singer Gulin Ciloglu on tour from Instanbul.

Sekanjabin infuses traditional Turkish music with various rhythms and styles from around the world, and re-imagines it with not-so-traditional instrumentation. From salsa and flamenco to reggae to calypso, the group breathes new life into centuries old folk music. Over it’s almost two decades evolution, the group has boasted members from the US, Turkey, and Peru. The combination has left the band with an eclectic and authentic mix of world influences. Front woman Gulin Ciloglu spends most of her time in Istanbul, but whenever she returns to the States, Sekanjabin assembles. With two violins, accordion, reeds, an oud, bazouki and all manner of world percussion amped up to club-worthy energy levels by a rhythm section of electric guitar, bass and full drum kit, Sekanjabin brings it. The result is a unique, high-energy live show that spills over from the stage to the dance floor – a wild and unusual flavor, instantly refreshing and inspirational!

As its members are always eager to clarify, Sekanjabin does not play traditional Turkish folk music. The ethno-folk collective is adamant on that point, in part because these musicians are serious students and lovers of all world music. Their dance and folk fusion draws from a trove of world-sourced melodies (many learned originally by Gülin as a child in Istanbul, others adapted from contemporary Turkish pop) set to a joyous collision of the various rhythms the players taught each other during countless get-togethers: Turkish, Gypsy, Calypso, Cumbia and Cascara, bellydance, reggae and many more. It is hypnotic, ecstatic, celebratory, participatory, and musically rich. Come to listen or dance your *** off!
