June 22, 23, 29, & 30, 2024
In “Notes on the Cinematographer,” filmmaker Robert Bresson writes about wanting “To move people not with images meant to move us, but with relations of images that render them both alive and moving.” Over a period of two weekends with artist RAYMOND MEEKS, participants will spend time in the studio and in the field contemplating the transformative relationship between images to generate emotional power by way of proximity and sequence.
To create in this manner often involves setting the conditions for chance and choice. This can take place alongside one’s practice of photographing, throughout the process of printmaking and postproduction, as well as the various stages of editing and sequencing for a book or exhibition. To work in this way will require the making of physical prints and objects, allowing for interventions often inspired by happenstance. These chance operations will serve to create unexpected forms of relationships.
Throughout the first weekend, participants will critique and edit work while setting a structure and foundation for a book or exhibition project. Participants will have access to CPW’s Digital Media Lab throughout the following week, creating a time to refine and shape images based on the feedback received, as well as experiment with alternative possibilities based on new relationships informed by chance exercises. We will use the final weekend to further refine, relying more on “choice” to inform a final work.
WHAT TO BRING: Participants should bring a work-in-progress, ideally a set of small prints (no more than 100) along with digital access to additional images and archives, if appropriate.
