Los Vega Son Jarocho with Pulso de Barro
Join us for an evening of Mexican~Latin~Caribbean roots with torchbearers of a 5 generation son jarocho legacy and recipients of the prestigious Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes Los Vega. They will be joined by local act Pulso de Barro who will include 20 minutes of son jarocho dance instruction for audience participation in their opening set. Audience members are invited to join the players after the show for a Fandango, a son jarocho jam open to all players.
Los Vega is a family-based ensemble with over 20 years of experience performing son jarocho, a traditional music from Veracruz, Mexico. Known for their strong cultural roots, refined musicianship, and dynamic stage presence, the group has become a standout name in the world of traditional Mexican music.
They have performed at major cultural festivals and venues across Mexico, as well as in the United States, Canada, China, and Colombia. Their music has been featured in film, including a recording of “La Bruja” for the Oscar-nominated soundtrack of Frida (2001). In 2019, they received another Oscar nomination through the Lunas del Auditorio.
With five albums and an international profile, Los Vega continues to offer a powerful and authentic son jarocho experience to audiences worldwide.

Pulso de Barro means “Pulse of Clay” and that is precisely what this Kingston-based collective delivers: a musical ceremony – land based celebration rooted in son jarocho, the four-hundred-year-old music born at the collision of African Yoruba rhythms, Andalusian melody, and indigenous voices on the Gulf Coast of Veracruz.
Maria Puente Flores and Mateo Cano, from Mexico City and Veracruz, are co-founders of this local group that focuses on cultural exchange, joyful resistance and traditional roots instrumentation. They will be joined by their band.
