What happens when 30 years of quiet service turns into a case of mistaken identity?

That’s the spark behind Carmen, a vibrant comedy drama starring Natascha McElhone, having its Kingston premiere at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Kingston Library, 61 Crown St. in Kingston.

NOTE: This is the rescheduled screening from Jan. 17, which was canceled due to snow.

Carmen has spent her life since age 16 in the shadow of her brother, the local priest in their small Maltese village.

When he dies suddenly three decades later, a twist of fate leads the villagers to mistake her for his successor.

Instead of correcting them, she steps into the role — challenging patriarchal norms, offering unconventional (and surprisingly effective) advice in the confessional, and discovering her own voice and independence.

Critics praise the film:

  • “Joyous.”Beyond the Cinerama Dome
  • “About a long‑overlooked woman who finally comes out of her shell.”Los Angeles Times
  • “McElhone delights with a charming and slightly loopy performance.”The New York Times

The 2021 film, inspired by true events, runs 1 hour 28 minutes and is not rated. It’s in English and Maltese with English subtitles.

The film’s trailer can be seen on YouTube: tinyurl.com/Carmen-MoviesWithSpirit.

The screening will be followed by a discussion. Refreshments will be served.

Suggested donation: $10 (ages 13 and up).
