Viscosity is a multi-color printmaking technique, also known as “simultaneous color printing,” where one can manipulate inks to be of different thickness and fluidity with additives such as oils or magnesium carbonate. This creates a resistance in some inks and allows all colors to be achieved on a single plate. One can use elements of intaglio or relief printing on their matrix.

Join us in this introductory 4 day workshop where students will learn various methods of viscosity printing using collagraph or plexiglass plates. Students will create plates from found materials (ex: string, tapes, plants, contact paper, etc.) and learn to coat their plates using inks of different viscosity. Students will learn about the many possibilities viscosity printing can offer including ghost prints, levitation marks or as Kathy Caraccio calls it “blurries.” If students wish to substitute collagraph with a drypoint on plexi-glass, that will be possible too!

All materials included.
