The Big Band Sound
The Town of Hyde Park’s annual “Music in the Parks” concert series will include (for the 22nd time!) a concert by The Big Band Sound 20-piece jazz orchestra this evening at 7 p.m. at Mills Mansion at the Staatsburg State Historic Site. The spacious grounds of the mansion are the perfect place for picnicking and listening to our jazz standards! Admission is free, so pack your lawn chairs and blankets. It’s located on Mills Mansion Road to the west of Route 9 in Staatsburg, 5 miles north of Hyde Park (Click on the location above).

The Big Band Sound jazz orchestra recreates the swinging sounds of the big band era and beyond, performing compositions that span more than a century of music, including classics made famous by Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, and many more. In the tradition of these great orchestras, The Big Band Sound is a 20-piece jazz band consisting of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, guitar, bass, piano, drums, and vocalists. The Big Band Sound has an active library of hundreds of compositions, from jumping jive to slow and sweet, all to bring the brassy big band experience to life. The foundation of the band’s repertoire is based firmly in the classic swing era and the Golden Age of the American Songbook, plus the band also performs a wide variety of music from then until today that continue the tradition of the stirring, full-bodied sounds of the big bands. In 2025, we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the band!
