Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans. It is also a celebration of African-American culture. Though it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865, the day was recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Join us, and special guest Rita Worthington (Alderwoman for the 4th Ward in the City of Kingston and Majority Leader for the Kingston Common Council, the first African American in the city’s history to serve in the position), for an informal look at the holiday’s history, and its significance in present day America.
