Fleischer Cartoons return to the Rosendale Theatre!

Fleischer Cartoons return to the Rosendale Theatre on Saturday night, April 26. This program will highlight the early Superman cartoons. Popeye will make an appearance, and we won’t forget Betty Boop and Koko—as support players this time!

This will be the fourth Fleischer Cartoon show at the Rosendale Theatre. Working with Max Fleischer’s granddaughter Jane, and Mauricio Alvarado of the company Rockin’ Pins , we are putting together programs out of their recently restored vintage works.

The Fleischer Brothers, Max and Dave, were renowned pioneers in animation. Max was the animator and inventor, while Dave was a director and producer. From 1919 to 1942, Fleischer Studios produced nearly 700 cartoons. The studio was the first to animate both Popeye and Superman — and Max created the legendary Betty Boop, who remains an icon of American culture to this day.

The project, Fabulous Fleischer Cartoons Restored, intends to “collect all of the Fleischer cartoons that remain today, restore them, and gather them into a single digital space so they can be seen by audiences as Max Fleischer intended.”

The April 26 program at the Rosendale Theatre will include about 90 minutes of screen time with the Superman shorts, as well as the troupe of Fleischer characters in their cartoon glory. In addition, we will have a post-screening Q&A moderated by Kiel Ferris of October Country Comics in New Paltz.
