The Hurley Heritage Society and Museum opens for the 2025 season with a reception for its newest exhibit, The Wynkoop House: Inspiring the Arts Across the Centuries on Saturday May 3rd from 1-4pm.
For over 300 years, eight generations of the Wynkoop family owned a Hurley farmstead located at the intersection of Wynkoop Road and Hurley Mountain Road. The property has attracted a remarkable number of artists over several centuries: from portrait painter Pieter Vanderlyn, grandfather to artist John Vanderlyn, to Winslow Homer and other listed artists in the latter half of the 19th century. Many local artists in the 20th and 21st centuries also visited and found inspiration, and it even became the set of the major motion picture ‘Tootsie’ starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange.
The exhibit displays collected images and objects that tell the remarkable story of how the Wynkoop farmstead served as a magnet for the art world. The exhibit will remain on display through the end of October during regular museum hours, Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm. The museum is open and free to the public.
