Reher Center Opens Historic Bakery for Public Tours Beginning Saturday July 15

Beginning this Saturday, July 15, visitors can step back in time to 1959 with a visit to the Reher Center. Led by experienced facilitators, the multimedia tours bring the rich history of the Rondout to life.

Told through the stories of the Reher family that worked and lived in the buildings at 99-101 Broadway, each tour explores nearly 100 years of history in the neighborhood. An immigrant Jewish family, the Rehers served community-acclaimed bump and smooth rolls, along with rye and challah breads from 1908 to the early 1980s.

“These tours are a delicious toast to local history,” said Interim Director Jackie Lieske. “Over the course of a morning, our guests learn how Frank Reher and his family built a business that nourished their  of the Sunday morning rush, and even get a taste of fresh-baked rolls from family-owned bakery Rosie General.”

Tours take place Saturdays and Sundays at 11:30 am, from now through November. Tickets are required, and can be purchased in advance at ReherCenter.org or in person.

The Reher Center is a cultural center and museum focusing on immigrant stories of the Hudson Valley. Born out of the 2002 rediscovery of a rare, intact 19th-century building that once housed an immigrant-owned bakery, the Reher Center aims to honor the Reher family’s legacy and the history of Kingston’s Rondout neighborhood.
