SUMMARY:WTO/99 (Close Up w/ prod. Alex Megaro)
DESCRIPTION:\n\nFrom November 30th to December 3rd 1999\, tens of thousands
of people occupied the streets of downtown Seattle to make known their co
ncerns about the existence of the World Trade Organization and its impacts
on the environment\, human rights\, and labor in the largest protests aga
inst economic globalization the US has ever seen.\n\nThe protests brought
together people from divergent sections of society—anarchists\, environm
 entalists\, labor unions\, consumer protection advocates\, pro-democracy g
roups\, and even religious organizations.\n\nThese protestors gathered in
direct action hoping to dissuade world leadership from continued support o
f the WTO and strived to focus the public’s attention to the kind of fut
ure the WTO would bring forth.\n\nBuilding from a thousand-hour archive\,
which includes more than 400 hours of never-before-seen footage\, WTO’99
reanimates the ideological conflicts that drew thousands to the streets o
f Seattle in hopes for a better future. The film is an immersive visual ar
tifact of a week that brought 40\,000 people together to warn of environme
ntal collapse\, the vanishing middle class\, and what the full inclusion o
f China in the World Trade Organization would mean for our collective futu
 re. The protesters—seen as a rabble-rousing nuisance at the time\, yet a
ppearing prophetic today—were met with extreme violence by a militarized
police force\, an all-too-fitting way to usher in a new century\; one tha
t is now defined by US failure to address climate change and increasing st
 ate aggression. (dir. Alex Megaro + Ian Bell\, U.S.\, 2025\, 100 min.)\n\n
“The political observations feel as predictive as they are reflexive.”
—The Film Stage\n\n\nAlex Megaro is an editor/producer of WTO/99\, and
was also the producer/editor of DRIFTWOOD\, winner of the Slamdance Grand
Jury Prize for Narrative Feature. He produced &amp\; edited 2 seasons of h
is VICE documentary series SOURCE MATERIAL\, as well as produced the Sheff
ield Doc Fest and AFI Docs official selection 8:08 HOW WE RESPOND.\n\n\n\n
