Silk & Stone – Susan Angeles & Larry Godfried –

Susan Angeles and Larry Godfried are Ulster County husband-and-wife artists who work in
different mediums—wall art and art furniture. They will be exhibiting jointly at the Arts Society
of Kingston starting April 1, 2023.

Susan is a mixed media painter, and the “silk” refers to her technique of embedding silk
and other textiles into her art work. Using an acrylic medium, she explores a variety of other
materials including paper, crushed minerals and found objects to create textured paintings that

The “stone” refers to Larry Godfried’s long-time work in precast terrazzo as Terrazzo by
Lorenzo. He designs and fabricates polished mineral mosaic art furniture that is inspired by
jewelry design. He will be exhibiting works from his Furniture as Jewelry collection.

Mixed Media Artist’s Work Reflects Multi-faceted Life
Susan Angeles’ passion for art began at an early age when she
would copy some of the paintings in her parents’ art collection. She
took private art lessons with Filipino artist Sofronio Y. Mendoza
(SYM) in the 1970s. This influenced her early drawings and oil
paintings, which were largely representational.
Immigrating to the U.S. after college led her to careers in marketing
and real estate. She raised two boys–one with special needs–while
working full-time and pursuing an MBA at NYU Stern School of
Business. As she juggled multiple priorities, Susan channeled her
artistic interests toward co-founding Anderson Center for Autism’s
art program, Expressive Outcomes, as well as selling her own art to
fundraise for Anderson (where her oldest son is a resident).
During the pandemic lock-down, Susan retired from her property
management job and immersed herself in art courses at the Art
Students League of New York, Woodstock School of Art and
Art2Life. She is now a full-time artist working in mixed media.
Susan’s art continues to evolve and is very much a reflection of her
multi-faceted life and her fascination with the therapeutic effects
of “sensory play” in art making. She often integrates silk, gauze and
other fabric into her paintings; and explores different materials
such as crushed minerals, paper and found objects as textural
elements. She also likes to combine smooth and rough textures,
organic and geometric shapes, and figurative and abstract
compositions–a process informed by her life experience navigating
different cultures.

A Craft Artist’s Journey To Making Outsized Jewelry
Larry Godfried came to study at SUNY New Paltz in 1970. (MS
Spanish Education, 1977) He is very much a product of the
vibrant cultural zeitgeist that characterized New Paltz
throughout the 1970s.
On a trip to Puerto Rico in 1978, he discovered a man making
primitive terrazzo headstones in a cemetery. Having worked as
a mason, Larry was immediately fascinated by the creative
potential of this material. Returning to New Paltz in 1979, he
rented a workshop at the Jewett Dairy Farm on Huguenot
Street and began experimenting and teaching himself the craft
of precast terrazzo.
As the terrazzo industry in New York City collapsed in the
1980s, Larry, whose business name is Terrazzo by Lorenzo,
began buying closeout mineral aggregates and industrial
grinding equipment.
In time, he recognized the technical similarity between precast
terrazzo and cloisonné enamel jewelry. He began studying
jewelry design and fabrication techniques, incorporating these
into his terrazzo method. The “Brooch” table (1991) was the
first in his “Furniture as Jewelry” Collection. Now well into his
fifth decade as a terrazzo craft artist, Larry continues to grow
this unique art furniture collection and deepen his artistic skill
sets at his dedicated terrazzo workshop in Kerhonkson, NY.
