JOHN BURROUGHS: THE WRITER’S INSPIRATION with Leslie Sharpe
We are pleased to announce that our guest speaker for Slabsides Day will be Leslie T. Sharpe, award-winning author of the acclaimed The Quarry Fox and Other Critters of the Wild Catskills. An affectionate appreciation of John Burroughs’ influence on her as a naturalist and as a writer, her talk will explore Burroughs as a writer and his contribution to the founding of the modern nature essay, one of the most popular and enduring of American literary genres.
Leslie T. Sharpe is a former Vice President of the New York City Audubon Society, an environmentalist, and a lifelong naturalist living in the Great Western Catskills. Sharpe has been named by the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development as one of Fifty Stewards of the Catskills, which she considers her greatest honor. Her book The Quarry Fox is a lyrical literary treatment of Catskills wildlife. Published by Overlook/Abrams, it is an Independent Book Publisher Gold Medal Award Winner for Excellence. The Quarry Fox audiobook, which Leslie narrates, was published by Silver Hollow Audio. Her essay, “The Bluebird Chronicles: A Catskills Love Story,” was featured in the December 2021 issue of Appalachia Journal. Sharpe has taught writing and editing at Columbia University, New York University, the City College of New York, and currently at Writers in the Mountains.
