SUMMARY:CARMEN
DESCRIPTION:What happens when 30 years of quiet service turns into a case o
f mistaken identity?\n\nThat’s the spark behind Carmen\, a vibrant comed
y drama starring Natascha McElhone\, having its Kingston premiere at 7 p.m
. Saturday\, March 7\, at the Kingston Library\, 61 Crown St. in Kingston.
\n\nNOTE: This is the rescheduled screening from Jan. 17\, which was cance
led due to snow.\n\nCarmen has spent her life since age 16 in the shadow o
f her brother\, the local priest in their small Maltese village.\n\nWhen h
e dies suddenly three decades later\, a twist of fate leads the villagers
to mistake her for his successor.\n\nInstead of correcting them\, she step
s into the role — challenging patriarchal norms\, offering unconventiona
l (and surprisingly effective) advice in the confessional\, and discoverin
g her own voice and independence.\n\nCritics praise the film:\n\n “Joyo
us.” — Beyond the Cinerama Dome\n “About a long‑overlooked woman
who finally comes out of her shell.” — Los Angeles Times\n “McElhon
e delights with a charming and slightly loopy performance.” — The New
 York Times\n\nThe 2021 film\, inspired by true events\, runs 1 hour 28 min
utes and is not rated. It’s in English and Maltese with English subtitle
s.\n\nThe film’s trailer can be seen on YouTube: tinyurl.com/Carmen-Movi
esWithSpirit.\n\nThe screening will be followed by a discussion. Refreshme
nts will be served.\n\nSuggested donation: $10 (ages 13 and up).\n\nMovies
With Spirit\, now in its 20th season\, presents screenings exploring conn
ection\, compassion and meaning. The monthly series has no religious affil
iation and welcomes all beliefs.\n\nScreenings take place at diverse worsh
ip and cultural spaces in Ulster County\, generally on the third Saturday
of each month. The series is organized by Gerry Harrington of Kingston.
