Located in the Shirt Factory in midtown, Kingston Ceramics Studio offers adults and kids a community space to work with clay. Whether you have wanted to try making pottery for a while and have never had the opportunity or are an experienced ceramicist looking for a space to create work within a community of makers, the Kingston Ceramics Studio is the place for you.

Opening in May of 2017, The Kingston Ceramics Studio is the brainchild of ceramicist Alexis Feldheim, a Kingston resident and maker. Having worked with clay for almost twenty years, Feldheim utilized her experience as a teacher, studio manager, and director of another community art center to create the efficient and welcoming studio that serves makers of the Hudson Valley today.

Kingston Ceramics Studio offers weekly classes for adults, focusing on a variety of throwing and hand building techniques. Additionally, classes will involve learning basics such as wedging, adding handles, surface treatments, and decorative techniques in order for every student to be able to create the work that they envision. A group of dedicated instructors run the weekly and individual classes, all of whom are talented and experienced potters in their own right and are willing to work on a variety of concepts and techniques with their students.

The studio itself is spacious and light-soaked, with large windows allowing natural light into the space. There are a variety of materials available for use, including three types of clay—white, red, and brown—as well as a number of ready-made glazes. The studio is equipped with eight wheels, wedging tables, two electric kilns, a slab roller, an extruder, and ample space to work. Members of the studio acquire a shelf for tool and work storage as well as access to the studio outside of class time; additionally, people taking classes are able to purchase weekly studio access. The variety of classes available mean that the studio is accessible to anyone interested, whether it be for adults, children, groups, or a date night activity.

If you’re curious about the space, visitors are welcome by appointment (845-331-2078) or chance, although the studio is closed Mondays.
